Colombia Portraits
People often asked me what I liked most about Colombia, and my answer was always the same: the people. Before I left Colombia, I wanted to do a project that would help me share with a small piece of what I had lived over the past year. Instead of giving you my own opinions about the country, I took portraits of a couple dozen Colombians (and a handful of expats) living in Bogotá and asked them a question for you:

"Growing up in Colombia implies carrying with you every day, in one form or another, the absolute happiness which each one of us has. At the same time, it implies carrying the weight of pessimism and resignation on our shoulders for being known for the dark legacies that the majority of of us do not deserve to carry. To grow up in Colombia makes you grasp onto happiness, at the very least, in order to get us through the bad periods. There is no way to be Colombian and not be full of strength."

"Crecer en Colombia implica llevar cada día, de alguna forma u otra, la alegría absoluta con la que cada uno de nosotros cuenta. Al mismo tiempo, implica llevar el pesimismo y la resignación a hombros, por ser reconocidos por los legados oscuros que la mayoría de nosotros no merecemos llevar a cuestas. Crecer en Colombia te hace aferrarte a la felicidad, por más mínima que sea, para salir de las malas épocas. No hay forma de ser Colombiano y no estar lleno de fortaleza."

"I want them to know that it's a very particular country, because it's a place which hasn't know what it is to live in peace for two or three generations now, and this has affected us in many ways, above all in the way in which we treat each other and interact amongst ourselves, and it could be said that this war has made us treat each other like enemies, Colombians know what I'm talking about, it's complex to put it into words.
But it's not all bad. Know that here in Colombia we all want to move past this, and to be known for being very intelligent, it's just a matter of channeling this intelligence into good things, we all know that each one of us in our own way want to do something good, and novel, and that contributes a grain of sand to society and to the next generations. We're just lacking support, because here there practically isn't any, even to the point at which having a good idea is bad if it doesn't benefit the interests of those in power or any of their friends.
I want people to know that everyone should be able to have the experience of having a Colombian in their life, because they don't know what they're missing, we're not just good people superficially, we're just different. Dearest reader, get to know more Colombians."

"Quiero que sepan que es un país muy particular, porque es un sitio que por dos o tres generaciones no ha conocido lo que es vivir en paz, y eso nos ha afectado en muchas formas, sobre todo con la manera de tratarnos entre nosotros mismos, y puede estar seguro que esa misma guerra nos hace tratarnos como enemigos, un colombiano sabe de lo que hablo y es complejo ponerlo en palabras.
Pero no todo es malo, sepa que aquí todos queremos salir adelante y que nos conocen por ser muy inteligentes, solo es cuestión de canalizar esa inteligencia en cosas buenas, pues aquí estamos seguros que cada uno de nosotros quiere a su manera hacer algo bueno, novedoso y que aporte un granito de arena a la sociedad y las siguientes generaciones. Solo nos falta apoyo porque aquí de eso casi no hay, incluso hasta el punto de que tener una buena idea es malo si no ayuda a lo intereses del que está en el poder o a sus amigos.
Quiero que sepa que cualquiera debería poder tener la experiencia de tener a un colombiano en su vida, porque no sabe lo que se pierde, pues no solo somos buenas personas en la superficie, simplemente somos diferentes. Querido lector, conozca más colombianos."

I want people to know that with the same caution you would use in any place in the world, you can travel Colombia and you will meet the most generous people that let you camp in their backyards and share whatever they can with you!

"As my friends in the U.S. could tell you, I never shut up when I start talking about Colombia. The year I spent living there left me with so many good memories, but what maybe impacted me the most was getting to know such incredibly warm people. And when I say people I am not just referring to those I got to know well, but also to the taxi driver, or the security guard, or the owner of the neighborhood corner store, and simply to every single Colombian I met. Saying that my reception in Colombia was positive does not do justice to the way that you guys embraced me in your country, and I'll never forget that lesson in how to treat a foreigner. During my year there I realized that one question always seemed to come up in my hundreds of conversations - 'What do you think about Colombia?' Well, Colombia is incredible, and I will always carry the promise to tell everyone all about it."

El año que viví allá me dejo con tantos momentos y recuerdos inolvidables, pero lo que de pronto más me impactó fue conocer a una gente demasiada cálida. Y cuando digo gente no solo me refiero a los que conocí bien, sino que también al taxista, o al portero, o al dueño de la tiendita del barrio, y simplemente a todiditos los colombianos que tuve el gusto de conocer. Decir que mi recepción en Colombia fue positiva no da justicia a la manera en que ustedes me acogieron en su país, y esa lección en como recibir a un extranjero nunca se me va a olvidar.
